Astrid Knöchlein - Historical oboes and recorders
Born in Rothenburg o.d.T. in the Franconian region of northern Bavaria, Astrid Knöchleins engagement with the recorder started at an early age during her schooling when she attended the „Meistersinger-Konservatorium“ in Nuernberg as a Junior Student for the recorder.
At the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) , Astrid Knöchlein gained her teaching and concert diploma with distinction, after studying the recorder with Matthias Weilenmann and Kees Boeke.
In 2007 Astrid Knöchlein was awarded an artistic diploma in baroque oboe by the Trossingen University of Music (MHS Trossingen) after studying with Martin Stadler and with Paolo Grazzi at the „Conservatorio dall’Abaco“ Verona within the „Erasmus“- exchange programme.
Her Masters degree followed in 2009 studying at the „Conservatorium van Amsterdam“ with Alfredo Bernardini.
Astrid Knöchlein is not only engaged with early music, but has also worked intensively on contemporary music. She has premiered several works, some of which were recorded by swiss radio DRS.
She is also prize-winner of several competitions such as 1st Prize Hegar- Competition for recorder Zürich, 1. Prize Kiwanis- Chambermusic-Competition and Moeck/SRP solo recorder competition London 2005.
She has also received invitations to play as a soloist at key festivals such as the „Fränkischer Sommer“, International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM / IGNM) , „Residenzwochen München“ etc.
She is currently a member of „Orchestra La Scintilla“ at the Opera House Zurich where she plays in opera productions and also concerts at famous festivals such as the Salzburg Festival which where partly produced on radio, DVD and CD.
Further to this she has accompanied Cecilia Bartoli also as soloist on her tours with several different orchestras.
In addition she works as freelance musician with different Ensembles and Orchestras thoroughout Europe such as I Barocchisti, Les Arts florissants, Orchestra della Scala Milano, Les Musiciens du Prince Monaco, La Stagione Frankfurt, La Cetra Basel, Kammerorchester Basel, Café Zimmermann, Hofkapelle Stuttgart, Wiener Akademie, Capella Gabetta, Ensemble La Fontaine, L’Arpa festante, Jeune Orchestre Atlantique, etc.
She has worked with conductors such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Giovanni Antonini, Riccardo Chailly, Thomas Hengelbrock, Adam Fischer, William Christie, Christopher Hogwood, Gianluca Capuano, Marc Minkowski, Ottavio Dantone, Andrea Marcon, Paul Goodwin, Attilio Cremonesi, Diego Fasolis, Muhai Tang, Ivor Bolton, Robin Ticciati and Fabio Luisi.
In addition to renowned artist Cecilia Bartoli, Astrid has worked among others with Plácido Domingo, Rolando Villazon and Sol Gabetta, at venues such as the Philarmonic Berlin, The Barbican London, Salle Pleyel and Cité de la musique Paris, Tonhalle Zürich, KKL Luzern, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Bolshoi Theatre Moskau and Gaststeig, Prinzregententheater, Herkulessaal in Munich.
Among the most interesting projects of the recent months was a tour with Cecilia Bartoli and „I Barocchisti“ as oboe and recorder soloist, and the invitation as principal oboe from „Les Arts florissants“ for the tour „Rameau- Maître à danser“.
Besides playing in orchestras, Astrid Knöchlein plays chamber music in Ensembles like „La Scintilla dei Fiati“ (Wind octet), „Ensemble Amaltheia“ (Baroque music), „La selva armonica“ (classical music) and „I colori del barocco“.
